First oncology consultation checklist

  • Photo identification and contact details
  • All medical reports in chronological order
  • Original imaging files when possible
  • Pathology report and relevant slides or blocks if requested
  • Medication list, allergies and previous operations
  • A written list of your main questions

Preparing for abdominal surgery

  • Follow the hospital’s fasting and medication instructions exactly
  • Ask specifically about diabetes medicines, anticoagulants and antiplatelet drugs
  • Stop smoking and optimise breathing where possible
  • Report fever, chest symptoms, skin infection or deterioration before admission
  • Arrange transport and postoperative support

Recovery principles

  • Use prescribed pain relief correctly
  • Mobilise and perform breathing exercises as advised
  • Follow the specific diet and wound instructions
  • Attend pathology and postoperative appointments
  • Do not resume heavy activity until cleared

Seek urgent medical assessment

Severe or worsening abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, increasing abdominal swelling, inability to pass stool or gas with deterioration, heavy bleeding, breathing difficulty, collapse, confusion, or fever and worsening condition after surgery require urgent assessment. Do not wait for a website or WhatsApp response.
