Complex colorectal cases and second surgical opinions
A second surgical opinion can clarify the diagnosis, whether surgery is possible and helpful, and what alternatives are available in advanced, recurrent, obstructing or previously operated cases.
Cases that may benefit from review
- Colon or rectal tumours extending into nearby tissues
- Cancer returning after previous treatment
- More than one tumour at the same time
- A tumour causing obstruction, perforation or bleeding
- Previous major abdominal or pelvic operations
- Uncertainty about tumour removal, joining the bowel or creating an opening for stool
Records needed
- A clinical summary and your current condition
- Endoscopy and biopsy reports
- The pathology report and slides when requested
- CT, MRI or PET reports and the original images
- Previous operation notes
- Details of chemotherapy or radiotherapy
What happens during the review?
We check that the required reports and scans are available.
We review the diagnosis, how far the tumour has spread and previous treatment.
We compare possible surgical and non-surgical options.
We explain the options, limitations and important risks clearly.

A second opinion does not guarantee that surgery is possible or the best choice. Its purpose is to provide a careful independent assessment that helps the patient understand the options and make an appropriate decision.
