Bariatric surgery

How do we choose the right bariatric operation?

There is no single operation that suits everyone. The choice depends on the patient’s health, eating pattern, reflux or diabetes, previous operations and ability to continue follow-up after surgery.

Last updated: September 2026 · Educational information; it does not replace individual medical assessment.

What do we review before deciding?

  • Weight and previous weight-loss attempts
  • Diabetes, blood pressure, sleep apnoea and other medical conditions
  • Reflux, swallowing difficulty and previous abdominal operations
  • Eating pattern, nutrition and psychological readiness
  • Surgical risks, treatment goals and ability to continue follow-up

The decision is made with the patient

No operation guarantees a specific amount of weight loss or treatment of a particular condition. Before deciding, we explain the benefits, risks, alternatives and importance of lifelong follow-up.
