What does assessment include?

• The site, size and whether the swelling can be pushed back
• Pain during coughing, lifting or activity
• Previous hernia or abdominal operations
• Factors such as smoking, obesity, diabetes and chronic cough

Open or laparoscopic repair?

Both approaches can be appropriate. Laparoscopic repair uses small incisions and may be especially useful for selected bilateral or recurrent groin hernias. The safest approach is chosen individually, and mesh is commonly used to reinforce the weak area.

Seek urgent assessment

• A painful swelling that no longer goes back
• Sudden severe pain, vomiting or increasing abdominal swelling
• Redness or marked tenderness over the hernia
• Inability to pass stool or gas with deterioration
